The Most Thrilling Moment

Heart pumping fast, pupils dilating, body quivering, lips pursed and your throat feels like it's contracting. You begin to move closer to the other party, this time with a bit of confidence. You close your eyes and slowly you feel the magic of love wrapping every inch of your body.

Have you ever encountered such experience? Hmm...I remember mine. First Kiss that is. Awe...It's one of the most spectacular moments in our lives. There are so many novels, music videos, movies, plays that depicts such experience, yet none have truly captured the real thing. I say if you really want to be filled with such delight, you'll just have to wait for it or seize it at the right moment.
Many of us may remember playing during our childhood and may have gotten an accidental kiss. Well, to me I don't think it counts, because that was just innocent play, so until you pass that stage and become fully mature, then and only then, will you be able to recognize the true kiss. Mark you, I didn't say "true love".

Well, now that we've established the kiss, where is the most romantic place to experience it? Well, I asked some persons and here's the result.
  • In the park on a rainy day
  • On the beach
  • On the balcony, while having a candle-light dinner
  • Next to a waterfall
  • Movie Theatre
  • While on an elevator/escalator
Romantic right? Well enough said. It's time for you to share that moment with someone.

The story continues...

Howdy y'all or in J'can terms: Wha gwaan? I told you, I'd be back! So much has happened in the few days that has passed. Many of you are probably in sports mode, so I must thank you for taking time out and reading my blog.

My high school English teacher once told me that writing is the best way to express one’s self. Indeed, she was right. Personally I believe it’s a gift to write. Each thought is carefully pieced together to form a complete notion.

After watching the movies: “Becoming Jane” and “Atonement”, I said to myself those writers not only have a huge task to do, but they all have to dig deep. Deep in the sense that amidst all they were going through, they all had to constantly keep writing. Now that I call ‘courage’.

We all are writers in our own ways, but without courage, our stories are all meaningless, if not heard. So, though you may not have received the punch line or resolution yet, keep writing, because one day someone may actually become inspired by your story.

What Kind of Story Will You Write?

Writing For Electronic Media Final Assignment

Well peeps, I never thought I'd say this, but my writing for electronic media class has come to an end, but dont worry, I've got plenty of blogs for you to enjoy soon.

Our final task was to watch the movie: Kissing Cousins and then re-create a film, tv and radio script from it. Man, can I tell you, I've learnt alot.

Getting started was one thing, but completing was the next. I had to travel everywhere just to get internet access; pharmacy, work, school. As I'm blogging, i think they're either going to throw me out or lock me in.

But let me share some of what I have grasped:

  • Always remember which medium you're writing for. I had to adapt to each writing style, so I could get the end result I wanted for my audience.
  • Be sure to mark all scene headings and titles.
  • Remember your audience!
  • Be sure that all five primary elements are listed: scene heading, action/description, dialogue, parenthesis and character.
  • Always revise the various abbreviations used for each medium, so as not to put it in the wrong script.

While preparing my final assignment, I had to adapt myself specifically for each medium. For radio, I had to think to myself how can I portray the story without the use of visual aid? It may sound difficult, but actually this was the most fun aspect during my preparation.

As for Tv (Double column script), I had to ask myself how can my audience understand the story line with both audio and visual aid? Seeing that my audience would be very much viewing everything, I had to consider the five elements very carefully in line with camera shots/angles and audio cues.

When we watch those big Hollywood movies, we sometimes think to ourselves: Wow! Some persons may say otherwise, but believe me, writing for screenplay is not as simple as it looks. You're very much telling the story to your audience without the use of audio or visual aid. So, it's very crucial that the script carries alot of details.

I have to say "nuff love" to my teacher: Ms Tanya Davies for showing us all the ropes and allowing us to be apart of this oh so...awesome experience. Don't just take my word for it, start your electronic media adventure today!

Well, that's all folks, but catch you real soon!

Jamaica Exhales

“Help me big up Jamaica, da land of wood and wata. Di system might not propa, but me love mi vybes, mi food and mi culture. Woa, can’t you see….” Despite all the bad news reports & stigmas, I am proud, yes proud of my country for the positives it has been able pass down from generation-generation. What am I talking about? The rich culture & dynamic tradition ofcourse!

                                                                          File Photo

Last night I had the privilege of not only enjoying myself, but had a catawampus time at the NCU’s Cultural Evening in celebration of Jamaica’s 50th Independence Anniversary & also the inauguration of NCU’s 23rd President. The event had persons jumping out of their seats, dancing away and eyes filled with tears of joy, while taking a trip to the past through an enriching musical presentation.

The event was hosted by old time favourite “Mass Gussy” from the hit Jamaican comedy series: Lime Tree Lane alongside Ms Susan Long-Gordon as “Mama Gertrude”.

                                                           File Photo

If yuh love yuh belly like me, then you would enjoy the warm potato pudding, pink greater cake (pink-pon-top/ pink panther), roast yam/ potato, sweet-sweet gizzard, tie-a-leaf/blue-draws, drops and a host of other finger licking cuisines.

And if you were a first time visitor, you would’ve gotten a dose of our heritage through a well-displayed line of booths. Talk about well made crafts and artifacts from the past.

Why, if our heroes were present just for that moment, they too would be proud. The event also had mascots resembling that of our past and present leaders--all prancing around and enjoying the constant spotlight. As I sat there watching the short drama piece depicting our two main political leaders, I said to myself, why can’t we all just get along and together unite as one?

For those who were also present at the event, you would agree with me when I say that the choreographer: Michael Bennett, Pastor Derek Bignall & the cast of “Jamaica Unite” did a marvelous job! “It leff a sweet taste inna mi mouth”.

Grand Gala—here we come!

THE ULTIMATE MOVE...

It’s often said that the more we know about each other, the better we are able to understand each other. This in my opinion should be a main rule during any relationship.

While in a taxi going home, I was quite surprised to hear what the driver was listening to. No, it wasn’t lewd music and no it didn’t involve any racial or religious discrimination. The driver was actually listening to a health program, but what drew my attention more was the topic being discussed.
“Functions of a woman’s body”- this was what he was listening! Now, if you’re a guy reading this, you may be wearing a smirk that says: “oh yea”. But if you’re a female like me, you may share similar sentiments.

Sadly, not many males today are eager to learn about a woman’s body. They may be fascinated, but have never really tried to read a book, search online, watch or listen to a program that imparts facts about the female body.
In this situation, I thought it was a plus that the driver wanted to know more about the female body. Some males would simply switch the station in fear of being branded a “sissy, mamah-man, or big nerd”. But, in my opinion they’re just “cowards and foolish” for believing such things.

From my Writing for Electronic Media class, I learnt that during the process of writing, one should always remember the medium in which he/she is writing for. Now how does this connect to this post? If you do not remember or know about the person(s) you’re dealing with, it’s already a problem. I’m not just referring to girlfriends/boyfriends; I’m also speaking to the parents, teachers, doctors, etc.

Kahlil Gibran says: “The reality of the other person is not in what he reveals to you, but in what he cannot reveal to you. Therefore, if you would understand him, listen not to what he says but rather what he does not say.

Learn how to send a letter

Post It Today!

When was the last the last time you posted a letter or perhaps received one? How did it make you feel? Today, technology has significantly faded out the once traditional method of delivering messages. However, wouldn’t you want to relive the experience or perchance share it with the new generation?

How To Send a Letter

The process of sending a letter is quite simple, given the fact that you follow each step correctly. But first, let’s grab a few things from our stationery corner.

Things You’ll Need:
  • Envelope- preferably letter size
  • Pencil/Pen
  • Clear tape

Step 1:
Create a message for the receiver. In the case of writing to an informal letter, you may want to begin by asking the question: How are you?

Step 2:
Fold your letter and place it in the envelope. Then, here is my favourite part: Lick and seal the envelope.

Step 3:
Write the name and address of the recipient at the front of the envelope, just below the right corner.

Step 4:
Write your name (sender) and address on the upper left corner of the envelope.
By now, your envelope should be looking like this:

Step 5:
Purchase a stamp that matches the destination of your letter. Then, stick the stamp in the upper right corner of your envelope (just above the recipient’s address).

Step 6:
Place the envelope in your mailbox or hand it to the postal worker. *If your mailbox has a red flag on it, raise the flag to show that you have an outgoing mail.

Now, that you’ve posted your letter, simply wait for your recipient’s reply. Depending on the destination and class of stamp purchased, your waiting time may vary; sometimes 3 days or more.

I really enjoy the process of sending a letter. Personally, I think it’s a very clever, romantic and wise way of getting our messages across. But, don’t just take my word for it, go ahead & post it today!!!

When was the last time you experienced the W.O.W?

W.O.W! (Wonders of Water)

We often times hear that water is good for us, but are you really aware of its benefits? Well, after reading this blog you may just exclaim the word 'wow!' Here's why...

Weight loss

Water is one of the best tools for weight loss! Yes, water does play a huge role. Instead o drinking sodas and other high calorie drinks, try water. Overtime your body will get use to that refreshing taste. Often times, we say that we’re hungry, but truth and in fact, we’re just thirsty. The great thing about it is that water has no CALORIES, no CARBS & no SUGAR. Cool, right?

It Keeps Your Heart healthy

We all know that keeping the heart healthy is of uthmost importance. Why, without it, our bodies are dead. Drinking a good amount of water could lower your risks of a heart attack. A study , published in 2002 in the American Journal of Medical Epidemiology found that participants "whodrink five or more glasses of plain water a day have a much lower risk of fatalcoronary heart disease compared to those who drink less than two glasses perday."

Excellent Energy Booster

Being dehydrated can easily demobilize your body and make you feel very tired -- I should know, because I once feinted, due to lack of water. Funny enough, if you're thirsty, you're already dehydrated -- and this may lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, dizziness and other symptoms.

Gets rid of Headaches

Have you ever had a day, where you simply could not function, due to a very pounding headache? Well, it may be that your body has dehydrated. Very often when we have headaches, it's actually a sign from your body that it needs water. I’m not ruling out the other factors ofcourse, but sometimes it’s because of dehydration.

Healthy skin

Have acne troubles? Well, drinking water can help you get that beautiful and glowing skin you’ve always wanted. However, it won’t be a matter of overnight, instead this will take place overtime. "Water helps preserve the hydration of the outerlayers of the skin, creating an effective barrier that protects the body frombacteria and irritants”.

Digestive problems

It’s really true! Water does help our digestive systems. Without it, our foods will not digest properly and we would have a really difficult time doing number 2; it loosens your bowels. Often times water is the answer for acid problems (acid reflux) or when consumed with fiber, constipation.

Cleansing

Water helps our bodies to flush out toxins and waste products.

Cancer risk

Drinking a healthy amount of water may also reduce the risk of certain cancers, such as: colon, bladder or possibly breast cancer.

Better exercise

If you’re an athlete or frequently works out at the gym, you’ll notice that when you exercise, your bodies then require additional water. So it’s important not just for athletes or persons who work out a lot, but everyone to hydrate before, during and after a hard day’s work.

Now that you are aware, do share the message with someone. Water is not just another drink or medicine, it's LIFE.
