Say Goodbye to 3 Bad Health Habits
Our
health is extremely important. The body
cannot function properly if it is
not entirely in a healthy state or condition, nor will it be able to fight
against infectious diseases and illnesses.
Anorexia nervosa, obesity and
bulimia are 3 eating disorders
observed amongst college students.
- Anorexia nervosa is a nervous complaint made by individuals who eat very little food, due to the thought of becoming too fat, when indeed they are thin.
In
college, some females tend to want that model look or perhaps that “summer
body”. These girls sometimes go the extreme by skipping certain meals and
eating little or nothing. Scientifically, this unhealthy habit is referred to
as “anorexia nervosa”.
Although
it’s more popular amongst females, it has also become the norm for some males.
How to prevent this?
- Create a positive perception of yourself. This means accepting who you are.
- Visit the doctor or gym trainer for an expert’s opinion towards losing weight.
- Eat a balanced meal (consisting a mix of nutrients)
- Develop & maintain a healthy diet.
- Organize your schedule wisely (proper time management). Let’s face it, sometimes we get so caught up with assignments that our growling stomachs are either overlooked or forgotten.
2. Another popular health crisis affecting
some youth is bulimia. This is linked to anorexia nervosa. It refers to
“an uncontrollable craving for food
that leads to eating huge quantities of
food, followed by forced vomiting or
abuse of laxatives” (Jones, Lorraine Henke, Tsumura,Ted K. & Bonekemper, Thomas W. Health and Safety for You: 7thEd).
How
to prevent this?
- Developing a healthy perception & a positive attitude towards one’s self may help alleviate this bad habit.
- Try to sustain a relationship with persons who can appreciate others, irrespective of what they look like.
- Create possible eating behavioural measures. For example, constantly using food as an immediate reward or solution for stress.
3. Obesity, is a common condition in which a
person’s excess fat accumulation
exceeds the average weight by 20% or more.
How to prevent this?
- One way is by eating a balanced meal each day. What we eat does matter and the amount as well.
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables.
- Avoid food with a high cholesterol level. It is not healthy!
- Regular exercise or engaging in regular physical activity.
- Control cravings for food.
Habits
can be good or bad, but in this case should be guarded against.
Healthy lifestyles or practices should
be a part of everyone’s mission. Don’t wait until it's too late.
Take that healthy step today!
